Make a big impact
In Xtern, we believe in making a big impact – both in our companies and in our community. We want to change the world for the better, one great idea at a time. Whether we’re helping the city tackle some of its most challenging problems or teaching the next generation of kids to code, we throw our hearts as well as our minds into every project.
During the Indy Civic Hack, some of the city’s smartest students focus on solving some of its toughest problems. Xterns have been participating since its inception in 2014, winning the grand prize the first year and being on 3 of the top 5 teams the second. The Indy Civic Hack is everything Xtern is about – channeling creative genius and technical virtuosity into making our community better, and having a blast while doing it.
Connecting six cultural districts, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (ICT) has transformed and invigorated the city’s public space. But maintaining all that the eight-mile trail has to offer (pedestrian paths, bike lanes, public art, Pacers Bike-share stations, and landscaping) has proven difficult. ICT has asked Xtern to build an app to help manage trail upkeep. The app uses photo services and geographical software to track damages along the trail. ICT employees can then access the data internally on their servers.
As technology becomes more thoroughly embedded in our world, it becomes increasingly important for kids to be exposed to STEM at a young age. Xtern partnered with TechPoint Foundation for Youth and community centers such as Christamore House to create a weekly mentoring program for underserved children in Indianapolis. For the past two summers, Xterns mentored program participants as they worked through a course on the fundamentals of computer programming. For most of them, this was their first exposure to computer programming, and for many of them, it won’t be their last. They learned skills this summer that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, and had a blast while doing it.
With the help of Xtern mentors, participants worked on Pebble Smart Watch applications, animations, online games, websites, and code challenges. We’re grateful for the chance to impart our skills on the next generation of Xterns.
